    A healthy animal gut to protect our planet.

    Microbes may be invisible to the human eye, yet they live in all environments on Earth. In the air, on the ground, under water, … And also in and on living organisms such as plants, humans and animals. They play an essential role in keeping these environments alive. The healthier the ecosystem, the less negative impact they have on our sustainability.

    Through the years, the definition of “microbiome” is further fine-tuned since more detailed techniques such as genomic approaches became available. The short definition of a microbiome: “a community of microorganisms -such as bacteria, viruses, fungi- that live on or inside the animal”.

    In the livestock business the intestinal microbiome is one of the key pillars defining a healthy gut (next to a tight gut lining and a well-controlled mucosal immunity). A well-balanced, nutritional diet enriched with microbiome stimulating ingredients certainly impacts the diversity, functionality, and resilience of this micro-ecosystem in the animal’s gut. In turn, this contributes to a better animal welfare, less diseases, lower antibiotics usage.

    3 aspects for better sustainability

     

    A healthy diet for a healthy body also applies to animals. A healthy gut is the environment in which the microbiome sits well. Even small improvements to the feed formulation of broilers, layers, pigs, shrimps, ... can boost the microbiome and make the production life cycle as efficient as possible.

     

    So how does this ultimately contribute to sustainability?

    Certain aspects of evolving to more sustainable farming are tackled by a legal framework at different speeds worldwide. We can think about the antibiotic ban for all species, the reduction of ZnO levels in piglet diets, animal welfare laws, emission limits,….

    These restrictions and guidelines have one thing in common: they directly or indirectly increase the need for a healthy and resilient gut microbiome.

    As a result of moving towards a more sustainable future, especially the gut and its microbiome is enormously challenged since many of these forbidden approaches covered up non-optimal management practices in an economically interesting way. We must find other, yet economically feasible, approaches to overcome the negative impact of producing in new ways.

     

    Therefore, we should focus on tools that stimulate a healthy gut. A healthier microbiome leads to:

    1. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions of farm animals by further enforcing the feed efficiency.

    2. Tackling the “antimicrobial resistance concern”as emerging safety issue worldwide.Aim is to empower the animal’s defense mechanisms against pathogens, which reduces the need for antibiotics.

    3. Improving animal welfare by benefitting the gut-brain axis with microbial metabolites as mediators.

    By developing, producing and providing well-designed gut health concepts to the feed industry, Proviron’s Animal Health team is helping to create a better world with healthier animals, sustainable farming and less antibiotics.
